New Light, Kinnaird Head

Located on Kinnaird Head, immediately to the northeast of Fraserburgh (Aberdeenshire), the Kinnaird Head Lighthouse replaced the neighbouring 18th C. Kinnaird Head Castle Lighthouse. Commissioned in 1991, this new electronic light comprises a simple 10m (33 feet) high tower. It no longer requires a keeper as it is remotely controlled by computer, but remains in the service of the Northern Lighthouse Board.

The old lighthouse, former keepers' cottages, pneumatic foghorn and other equipment have been given over to form the major exhibits of the adjacent Museum of Scottish Lighthouses.

In 2004, with the support of Historic Scotland and the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, the Northern Lighthouse Board announced that it would decommission this new lighthouse and restore the light to the old building.
