Kirkhope Tower, Ettrickbridge

Located in the Ettrick valley, a half-mile (1 km) northwest of Ettrickbridge and 6 miles (10 km) west of Selkirk, Kirkhope Tower was built in the 16th C. undoubtedly to provide security from the Borders Reivers. This square four-storey structure was once owned by the Scotts of Harden, but burned by the Armstrongs in 1543. Acquired by the Buccleuchs in the early 18th C., the tower was eventually abandoned in the 19th C., but was restored in 1996 by the architect France Smoor as a private residence.
