William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott


(6th Duke of Buccleuch; 8th Duke of Queensberry)

1831 - 1914

Noble and politician. Born in Montagu House (London), Scott served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Midlothian between 1853-68 and again between 1874-80. A sarcastic pamphlet was published in 1880, entitled Political Achievements of the Earl of Dalkeith, which was blank. He lost his seat to the Liberal William Gladstone (1809-98). He married Louisa. the daughter of James Hamilton, the 1st Duke of Abercorn, in London (1859). Louisa served as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra, which kept the couple in London for the much of the time. Scott succeeded his father as the 6th Duke of Buccleuch in 1884. He died at Montagu House and lies buried in the crypt of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Dalkeith.
