Dorothy Paul


1937 -

Comedienne, raconteur and singer. Paul was born in Dennistoun (Glasgow) and educated at Whitehill Secondary School. She entered the retail trade as a junior in a clothing shop (1952).

Known for her impersonations of Glasgow characters and humorous observations drawn from her life in the city, Paul got her break in theatre after winning a talent competition. She began a career-long series of pantomime appearances when she took a starring role Aladdin at Edinburgh's Palladium Theatre (1957). She went on to work in variety with other comedy greats such as Jack Milroy (1915 - 2001) and Johnny Beattie (b.1926).

Paul joined Scottish Television's The One O'Clock Gang in 1959. She also sang at holiday camps and social clubs, but went on to host Housecall and appear in Garnock Way, The Steamie and a celebration of the Glasgow football club, The Celtic Story. She has also had film roles, including Bookie (1987). From 1991 she became noted for her one-woman shows including Now That's Her, Now That's Her Again, The Full Dorothy and A Happy Medium.

She retired in 2015.
