Rear Admiral Sir Anthony Cecil Capel Miers

1906 - 1985

Submariner and naval commander. Born in Inverness. Miers entered the navy, serving in submarines during World War II. He won a Victoria Cross for an action in Corfu Harbour (1942). He was the commander of the submarine HMS Torbay and slipped into the harbour, torpedoing a destroyer and two supply ships before withdrawing under sustained attack by enemy depth-charges.

His honours include: Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE), Companion of The Most Honourable Order of the Bath (CB) and the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).

Capel Miers died in Inverness and lies buried in Tomnahurich Cemetery. His Victoria Cross is held by the Imperial War Museum (London).

A question was asked in Parliament, in 1989, relating to an incident where Miers may have unnecessarily shot a group of German sailors during a Mediterranean patrol in 1941.
