James Hamilton


(1st Earl of Abercorn; 2nd Baron Paisley)

1575 - 1617

Courtier and noble. The son of Claude Hamilton, 1st Baron Paisley. Hamilton was prominent in the Court of King James VI (1566 - 1625). He was created Lord Abercorn (1603) and raised to the peerage as the Earl of Abercorn (1606), with lands at Auchendrane (South Ayrshire). James VI gave him a further large grant of land in County Tyrone (Northern Ireland) in 1611. In Tyrone was built Baronscourt, which remains the principle residence of the Abercorns today.
