(James) Stuart Park


1862 - 1933

Artist. Born in Kidderminster (Worcestershire, England), the son of Scottish parents who had moved south from Catrine (East Ayrshire) to allow his father to work as a carpet designer. Apprenticed as an engineer, Park had an amateur interest in art and took evening classes at Glasgow School of Art and later worked in Paris, He took up art professionally in Glasgow in 1888 and became known for his flower paintings. He was one of the influential group of artists known as the 'Glasgow Boys'. He settled in Kilmarnock in 1896 but held an annual exhibition of his work regularly at the McLellan Galleries in Glasgow and also at the Royal Scottish Academy. His work can be seen in the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow, the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre and at the Dick Institute Museum and Art Gallery in Kilmarnock.
