William Marshall

1748 - 1833

Composer and fiddle-player. Marshall was born in Fochabers and worked until 1790 as a House Steward and Butler to Alexander Gordon, the 4th Duke of Gordon (1743 - 1827) and thereafter as Factor to the Duke (until 1817). Marshall was a famous violin-player and an able composer of tunes for that instrument. These were well-received, with some 287 being published, in three collections, which appeared in 1793, 1822 and posthumously in 1847.

His popular strathspeys included Craigellachie Bridge, Gordon Castle, The Duke of Gordon's Birthday and The Marchioness of Huntly.
