Composer and fiddle-player. Marshall was born in Fochabers and worked until 1790 as a House Steward and Butler to Alexander Gordon, the 4th Duke of Gordon (1743 - 1827) and thereafter as Factor to the Duke (until 1817). Marshall was a famous violin-player and an able composer of tunes for that instrument. These were well-received, with some 287 being published, in three collections, which appeared in 1793, 1822 and posthumously in 1847.
