Thomas (Tom) Brown

1933 -

Engineer, who helped develop the first medical ultrasound scanner. Born in Glasgow, Brown was educated at Allan Glen's School in the city. He joined the engineering company Kelvin & Hughes as an apprentice on leaving school. With Prof. Ian Donald (1910 - 87) of the University of Glasgow, Brown developed an ultrasound detector originally designed for finding flaws in metal so that it was effective for medical use. The system was commercialised and improved over succeeding years to become a standard item of hospital equipment.
