John Campbell


(2nd Earl of Breadalbane)

1662 - 1752

Eccentric noble and politician, known as Old Rag. Styled Lord Glenorchy from 1681, he succeeded to the Earldom of Breadalbane on the death of his father in 1717. He served as Lord-Lieutenant of Perthshire (1725-52) and was a Scottish Representative Peer (1736-47). he married twice, on both occasions to the daughters of English nobles.

Campbell died at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and was succeeded by his son, another John (c.1696 - 1782), who was noted as a politician and diplomat.
