William Hunter

Pioneer in the field of Obstetrics. Born at Long Calderwood Farm near East Kilbride (South Lanarkshire), the elder brother of John Hunter (1728-93). Hunter was educated at the University of Glasgow and apprenticed to William Cullen (1710-90) in Hamilton. He attended lectures given by Alexander Monro (Primus; 1697 - 1767) in Edinburgh, but gained his reputation in the teaching hospitals of London. Perhaps best known for his collection of anatomical specimens, coins and minerals, Hunter left this to the University of Glasgow to form the core of what is now the Hunterian Museum.
