Golfer, who dominated the game in the USA in the first decade of the 20th C. Born in North Berwick, the son of the Head Greenkeeper on the West Links, Anderson was educated at the North Berwick Public School. He was employed as an apprentice club-maker in Gullane, but emigrated for the USA in 1896. The following year he obtained the post of professional at the Misquamicut Club (Rhode Island). He was runner-up in his first US Open Championship (1897) and went on to win the competition on four occasions (1901, 1903-05), one of only four individuals to attain this feat. He also won the Western Open Championship a similar number of times (1902, 1904, 1908-9).
He died in Philadelphia and was inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame in 1975.
