John Reid

1840 - 1916

Golfing pioneer. Born in Dunfermline, Reid emigrated for the USA in 1866. Regarded as the 'Father of American Golf', he started playing the game on a field near his home at Yonkers (New York) using equipment brought from Scotland. This led to the foundation in 1888 of the first club in the USA, the famed St. Andrew's Golf Club, with a three-hole course. He died in Yonkers and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. Reid is remembered by a statue at Fox Hill Golf Club in Lakewood, Colorado.
