Sir Norman MacLeod


1614 - 1705

Scholar and soldier. MacLeod lived at the Gunnery in the northeast of Hebridean island of Berneray. Macleod was a respected Gaelic scholar who fought for King Charles II (1630-85) at the Battle of Worcester (1651), where his regiment was almost wiped out. MacLeod was captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London. He escaped and returned to Berneray in 1653, where he died at the great age of 91. MacLeod lies buried in St. Clement's churchyard at Rodel on Harris.
