Henry Stewart

(Lord Methven)

c.1495 - c.1551

Noble. Stewart was the son of Andrew, Lord Evandale. He opposed Archibald Douglas, the 6th Earl of Angus (1489 - 1557). In 1528, Stewart married Margaret Tudor (1489 - 1541), who had been Douglas' wife and was also the widow of King James IV (1473 - 1513). Her son, James V, gave the couple Methven Castle and its estates. Stewart was given the title Lord Methven and held the offices of Master Carver to the King, Lord Chancellor and Keeper of the Seal. He was also granted land at Cockburnspath and Galashiels. The couple had a daughter who died in infancy and Margaret died in 1541. Stewart then married Janet, daughter of the Earl of Atholl, with whom he had a son, Henry, who was to succeed him as the 2nd Lord Methven.
