Alexander (Alex) Ligertwood


1946 -

Versatile rock singer and musician. Born in Glasgow, Ligertwood formed a deep love for American music and developed a soulful rhythm and blues singing style. He came to the fore as a member of the critically acclaimed group The Senate with Robbie McIntosh (1950-74), who was later a member of the Average White Band.

Ligertwood was lead vocalist for the Jeff Beck Band in the early seventies. Having gained a reputation for his powerful vocals he joined Brian Auger's band Oblivion Express in 1971, contributing to albums such as Second Wind (1972) and Reinforcements (1975). He worked with various other artists, but is best known for his eighteen year partnership with Carlos Santana, providing his unique sound and interpretation on twelve albums, including Marathon (1979), Swing of Delight (1980), Zebop! (1981), Shango (1982), Havana Moon (1983) and Milagro (1992).

Ligertwood lives in Southern California and still performs with his band Metro, as well as numerous other musical projects.
