Politician and promoter of the Gaelic language. Born in Balmaha (Loch Lomond), The daughter of John MacDonald Bannerman, Lord Bannerman of Kildonan (1902-69), Michie was educated at Aberdeen High School for Girls, Lansdowne House School (Edinburgh) and Edinburgh College of Speech Therapy, graduating in 1955. Living in Oban, she worked as a speech therapist for Argyll and Clyde Health Board before being elected as Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Argyll & Bute in 1987. Michie served Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Scottish Affairs and as Chairperson of the party (1991-3). A member of An Comunn Gaidhealach, she was strong advocate of the Gaelic language. Michie was also an enthusiast for Home Rule for Scotland. Other campaigns included her attempts get a better deal for hill farmers and crofters, and to secure a public inquiry into the crash of the RAF Chinook helicopter on the Mull of Kintyre in 1994 .
For a time she served as a Vice-President of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Standing down from Parliament in 2001, she was elevated to the peerage as Baroness Michie of Gallanach becoming the first Peer to pledge the oath of allegance in Gaelic.
Having suffered from cancer, she died in Oban.
