David Mach


1956 -

Sculptor and installation artist. Born in Methil (Fife), Mach trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee (1974-79) and the Royal College of Art in London (1979-82). Elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1998, Mach was appointed an Honorary Professor in Edinburgh College of Art in 1999 and the following year accepted the position of Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Mach has exhibited his work internationally. His large public installations include It Takes Two (1991), Temple at Tyre in Leith Docks, supporting Edinburgh's bid for City of Architecture in 1995, Train (1997), Britain's largest contemporary public sculpture located in Darlington, Big Heids (1999), which forms part of the M8 Art Project, and National Portrait, a collage of Britain for the Millennium Dome at Greenwich (1999).

He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1988 and won the Lord Provost's Prize from the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1992.
