Alexander (Sandy) Fraser


1940 -

Artist. Born in Aberdeen, Fraser trained at Gray's School of Art in the city and Hospitalfield House (Arbroath). After graduation, he spent time travelling in France and Italy and his work often draws on his travels but is also inspired by his native Aberdeenshire. He went on to become a lecturer in painting at the Gray's School.

Working in variety of styles throughout his career, Fraser is interested in the detail of landscape and textures. He produces atmospheric compositions involving people, architecture, landscapes, animals and birds. Since the 1980s, his work has become increasingly figurative. Fraser is also a noted painter of portraits, with his oil of singer Jean Redpath (b.1937) in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland. He is a Member of the Royal Scottish Academy.
