(William) Hamilton Beattie


1842 - 1898

Architect. Born in Edinburgh, the son of George Beattie, an architect and builder, the young Beattie trained with David Bryce before taking over his father's practice around 1860. He specialised in hotels, and designed several Edinburgh hotels including the Clarendon (1875), Braid Hills Hotel (1886), North British (now Balmoral) Hotel (1895) and the Carlton Hotel (1898), together with the Grand Hotel (1887) in Lerwick. He was also responsible for a number of other types of building including Cowan's Paper Warehouse (1864) and Jenner's Department Store (1893) on Princes Street.

He died at his home in Douglas Crescent and was buried in Dean Cemetery.
