William Reynolds

1827 - 1869

One of the first winners of the Victoria Cross. Born in Edinburgh, Reynolds was a private in the Scots (Fusilier) Guards, during the Crimean War. At the Battle of Alma on 20th September 1854, he rallied the troops around the Colours and ensured they fought on despite coming under increasingly heavy fire. After retiring from the Army he worked in London as a banker's messenger.

He lies buried in an unmarked grave in the London Necropolis (also known as Brookwood Cemetery). In 2006 the Scots Guards Association Club received permission to erect a memorial in his honour. His Victoria Cross is held by the Guards Regimental Headquarters in London.
