Dougal Haston

1940 - 1977

Mountaineer. Born in Currie (Midlothian), Haston became a member of the UK team which conquered the south face of Annapurna (1970). In 1966, he was the first to climb the North Face of the Eiger (Switzerland) by a direct route and the first to climb Changabang in India (1974). He was one of a team which made the first ascent of the South-West face of Mount Everest (1975) becoming, with his partner Doug Scott, the first Britons to reach the summit of that mountain. The same year, Haston was involved in the first ascent of the South-West face of Mount McKinley in Alaska.

He was killed in an avalanche while skiing in the Alps in 1977, but is remembered by a plaque on the railway bridge at Currie, where he practised climbing in his youth.

Haston was inducted as one of the first members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
