Dr. Alexander Gray

1751 - 1807

Surgeon. Born in Elgin, the youngest son of a deacon of the town, Gray was apprenticed to a local physician before completing his medical education in Edinburgh. Thereafter he obtained an appointment as a surgeon with the East India Company in Bengal, where he was to spend more than twenty years, and was able to amass a considerable fortune. He left most of his money for charitable purposes most notably the sum of £20,000 to establish a hospital for the sick and the poor of the town and county of Elgin. Despite a challenge to the will by his heirs, Dr Gray's hospital eventually opened in Elgin in 1819 and continues in use today.
