Military physician. Born in Prestonpans (East Lothian), where he is remembered by a statue. Alexander joined the Army in 1834 and rose to become Director-General of the Medical Department of the British Army. He improved the sanitary conditions in the army, and served as chief Medical Officer to the Light Division in the Crimean War, where he worked hard to alleviate suffering. He died in London but was buried in Prestonpans. Florence Nightingale wrote an obituary of Alexander for The Lancet.
