Presbyterian noble. Ruthven organised a coup, called the Ruthven Raid, which involved taking the fifteen-year-old King James VI (1566 - 1625) prisoner, until he agreed to pro-Protestant terms. James was held in Huntingtower, Ruthven's seat near Perth. The terms primarily related to the banishing of Esmé Stuart, Lord Lennox (1542 - 1583) and allowing Ruthven to run the government. However, within two years Ruthven was executed for treason.
