Harold Segerson Mahony


1867 - 1905

Scottish-Irish tennis player. Born of wealthy Irish parents in Charlotte Square in Edinburgh, Mahony was raised mostly at the family home at Dromore Castle in Kerry (Ireland) and studied at the university in Dublin, where he began playing tennis. He played in the Wimbledon Championship of 1890, going on to win in 1896. This was the last Grand Slam win by a Scot until Andy Murray in 2012. Mahony died in a cycling accident in Ireland at the age of 38.
