Calum Macdonald


1953 -

Musician and founder of the Gaelic folk-rock bank Runrig, with his brother Rory (b.1949). Born in Dornoch, Macdonald was raised in Lochmaddy (North Uist) before moving to Portree on Skye to attend secondary school. He studied physical education at Jordanhill College in Glasgow and worked for a time as a teacher. He initially played drums in the band and wrote the lyrics for many of their songs but later took his turn as vocalist. Having lived in Edinburgh during the 1980s he moved his family to Contin in the early 1990s.
