Lord Thomas Erskine

1705 - 1766

Noble. The eldest son of John Erskine, the 6th Earl of Mar (1675 - 1732) who was known as 'Bobbing John' because of his inconsistent support for the government at the time. The father eventually backed the Jacobite cause in 1715 and as a result lost his title and estates, hence Thomas had nothing to inherit. Erskine married Charlotte Hope, daughter of Charles Hope, the 1st Earl of Hopetoun, in 1741. He served as Member of Parliament for Stirling (1728-34), for Stirlingshire (1747) and Clackmannanshire (1747-54). He was also a senior mason, serving as the 14th Grand Master Mason of Scotland. He had a home in Gayfield House in Edinburgh.
