John Adam Houston


1812 - 1884

Painter. Although born in Wales, Houston was brought to Dalkeith (Midlothian) by his Scottish parents at the age of eight. He trained as an artist at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh, under Sir William Allan (1782 - 1850) and studied for a time in London, Paris and Germany, before returning to Edinburgh in 1841. Houston is known for his paintings of scenes and people from history, particularly notable is his The Secreting of the Regalia of Scotland in Kinneff Church, 1652. He also produced notable landscapes, cityscapes of Pisa, Florence, and Siena from a tour in 1855 and a fine View of Glasgow and the Cathedral (c. 1840). His health caused him to move to London c. 1858 where he remained until his death.
