Politician. The son of noted nationalist politician Winnie Ewing (b.1929) and elder brother of another politician Annabelle (b.1960), Ewing was educated at Loretto School and at the University of Glasgow. As a member of the Scottish National Party, he was elected to represent Inverness and Nairn in the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and subsequently re-elected in 2003, 2007 and 2011. In government, he served as Minister for Community Safety (2007-11) and Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism (from 2011). His wife, Margaret Ewing (1945 - 2006), was also a senior figure in the Scottish National Party.
