Norah Mears

(Norah Geddes)

1887 - 1967

Landscape architect. Mears was the eldest child of the noted town planner Sir Patrick Geddes (1854 - 1932). She collaborated with her father on various design schemes and is noted particularly for her social and philanthropic works occupying unused urban spaces, such as the West Port Garden in Edinburgh and children's playgrounds in Dublin. She married architect Frank Mears (1880 - 1953), with whom she had also collaborated on projects such as the laying out of the Scottish National Zoological Park in Edinburgh (1913-14). The couple lived in Ramsay Garden, from where Norah managed the Outlook Tower and Camera Obscura on Edinburgh's Castlehill on behalf of her father.
