John (Jack) Edgar Webster

1918 - 1999

Scots-Canadian journalist and broadcaster. Born in Glasgow, the son of an iron-worker, he began his career with the Evening Times in the city when he was 14, going on to work for other Scottish newspapers and in Fleet Street. He served in the British Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Major. He emigrated to British Columbia (Canada) in 1947, working for the Vancouver Sun newspaper. He was a pioneer of the 'talk radio' format from 1953 and moved his radio show to television in 1979, where he was noted for his tough interviewing style. In 1990, he joined the CBC television programme Front Page Challenge.

Webster was inducted into the Canadian News Hall of Fame in 1987, and the following year was made a Member of the Order of Canada. The Jack Webster Foundation gives the annual Jack Webster Award for journalistic excellence in British Columbia.
