Robert Duncan Low

(R. D. Low)

1895 - 1980

Comic writer and editor. Born in Dundee, the son of a jute mill mechanic, Low joined the notable publisher D.C. Thomson in the city as a journalist. He launched illustrated story-papers early in his career, such as The Rover (1922), The Wizard (1923) and The Hotspur (1933) but is perhaps most famous as the co-creator and writer of The Broons (1936) and Oor Wullie (1937) as cartoon strips in the Sunday Post with illustrator Dudley D. Watkins (1907-69). He is said to have modelled the characters in these strips on his own family and friends. He went on to launch two of the world’s longest-running comics; namely The Dandy (1937) and The Beano (1938).
