Lord William Campbell


1730 - 1778

Statesman, who was the last British Governor of South Carolina. Born the younger son of John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll (c.1693 - 1770). He served in the Royal Navy in India, in the Americas and was then appointed Governor of Nova Scotia (1766-73). In 1775, at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, Campbell was appointed Governor of South Carolina but it was a short assignment and he left within months. The following year he was wounded during a British naval attack and died as a result of this wound two years later.
