John Paton Laurie


1897 - 1980

Actor. Laurie was born and educated in Dumfries. After serving in the First World-War, he took up an acting career. He starred in more than 80 films, including classics such as The 39 Steps (1935) and Hamlet (1948), as well as being in demand as a narrator. Laurie's most enduring role was perhaps that of the pessimistic Private Fraser in the BBC television comedy Dad's Army.

He died in Chalfont St. Peter (England).
