James Herriot

1916 - 1995

Author. Born in Sunderland in 1916, though brought up in Glasgow, James Herriot attended Glasgow Veterinary College and went on to spent his career as a veterinary surgeon. However, he found fame with his semi-autobiographical novels humourously describing the adventures of a Yorkshire veterinary practice. The books included It shouldn't happen to a Vet and Vet in a Spin and were made into a highly successful BBC television series All Creatures Great and Small (1977). He died in Thirsk (Yorkshire).
