Soldier. Born in Fife, a grandson of Andrew Leslie, 5th Earl of Rothes. Leslie fought in Sweden before returning to Scotland to take a leading role in the anti-royalist Covenanting Army. He was second-in-command to Sir Alexander Leslie (c.1580 - 1661) at the Battle of Marston Moor (1644) and led the Covenanting Army at Philiphaugh (1645). However, now fighting for the Royalist cause, King Charles II having signed the Covenant, Leslie was defeated by Cromwell at Dunbar (1650). He was taken prisoner after the Battle of Worcester (1651) and held in the Tower of London. When Charles II was restored (1660), Leslie was created Lord Newark.
