Saint Moluag

(St. Moluag)

c.520 - 592

An early Christian missionary to Scotland. Born in Ireland, he is thought to have come to Lismore in 562 AD, some accounts suggesting he raced St. Columba to the island, cutting off his finger and throwing it onto the shore from his boat to ensure he claimed Lismore first. Church dedications to St. Moluag extend from the East to the West coast of Scotland, but the Mediaeval St Moluag's Cathedral is the most important, now serving as the parish church on Lismore.

He is said to have died at Ardclach (Highland) and is thought to lie buried on Lismore. His staff (the Bacchuill Mor or 'great staff') is held by the Livingstone family at Bachuil on Lismore.
