Archibald Campbell

(1st Duke and 10th Earl of Argyll)

1658 - 1703

Enthusiastic supporter of William of Orange and the ousting of King James VII (1633 - 1701), who had re-embraced the 'old religion' and executed his father, the 9th Earl of Argyll. In return he was restored to his father's title in 1689 and created Duke of Argyll in 1701. Along with John Dalrymple (1648 - 1707), the Earl of Stair and John Campbell (1635 - 1717), Earl of Breadalbane, he instigated the Massacre of Glencoe where the MacDonalds were murdered, ostensibly as part of a long-running clan feud, but in reality in a carefully orchestrated government plot to make an example of those with Jacobite sympathies. The massacre was particularly disturbing because the Campbell troops had turned on the MacDonalds after accepting their hospitality. A noted philanderer, Campbell is said to have invented the condom! He died near Newcastle-upon-Tyne (England).
