Thomas (Tommy) Armour

1896 - 1968

Golfer. Born in Edinburgh, the son of a baker, Armour was educated at Boroughmuir Senior Secondary School- and the University of Edinburgh, although he seems not to have graduated having enlisted in the army at the outbreak the First World War. Armour was a successful amateur golfer and, despite partially losing his sight during the War, he turned professional in 1924. He moved to the USA in 1925 and his first major victory came with the US Open (1927). Various other titles followed, including the British Open (1931).

Armour retired in 1935 but became a very successful teacher of the sport, co-authoring the best-selling book How to Play your Best Golf all the Time (1952). He died in New York and was inducted as one of the first members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
