Tom McGrath


1940 -

Poet and playwright. Born in Rutherglen, McGrath published his first poems in 1962. He was the founding editor of the underground magazine International Times (1966). He went on to study at the University of Glasgow. McGrath developed interests in the theatre, both directing and writing plays. His plays include Laurel and Hardy (1976) and The Hardman (1977), about the gangster and murderer Jimmy Boyle (b.1944) and premiered in Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre, together with City (1989), set in Glasgow, and The Dream Train (1999).

Known for his diverse interests, McGrath was musical director of The Great Northern Welly Boot Show, starring comedian Billy Connolly (b.1942), Director of Glasgow's Third Eye Centre (1974-77), Associate Literary Director of Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum Theatre and has been closely involved with the Scottish Arts Council.
