Buxton Daeblitz Orr

1924 - 1997

Versatile composer. Born in Glasgow, his mother having been a central figure in the Citizen's Theatre, Orr initially followed a career in medicine, but gave this up for music. He joined the staff of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and his work included compositions for films and brass bands as well as songs, jazz-inspired classical works and opera. His most notable pieces include the Celtic Suite (1968) and Caledonian Suite (1980), which draw on his Scottish roots. He was also a noted conductor of the London Jazz Composers' Orchestra (1970-80) and the Guildhall New Music Ensemble (1975-91). He died in Hereford (England).
