David Stow

1793 - 1864

Education pioneer. Born in Paisley, Stow was a wealthy textile merchant, who was interested in the education of his employees and their children. He created schools for these children and colleges for the training of the teachers. A pioneer in education, he advocated the abolishment of corporal punishment and the creation of school playgrounds. After his death in 1864, his college became the Jordanhill College of Education, now the Jordanhill College of Teacher Training, part of the University of Strathclyde. The Stow College of Education still carries his name.
