William (Willie) Graham

1845 - 1914

Photographer. Born in Springburn, Glasgow in 1845, William Graham is best remembered as one of the earliest photographers to record the daily lives of the city's inhabitants. He originally worked for the railways, which dominated Springburn, but after unemployment decided to turn his hobby of photography into a profession. He not only recorded the people of Glasgow, but also the old and new buildings of the city at that time as well as various social events. After his death in 1914, the Mitchell Library acquired his collection of photographs and associated documents.
