Harthill Services on the M8 motorway
©2011 Gazetteer for Scotland
A former mining village in Central Scotland, Harthill lies on the River Almond near the M8 motorway, 2 miles (3 km) west of Whitburn. The village was divided between the two local government areas of West Lothian and North Lanarkshire in 1978. With the building of the M8 in the 1960s, Scotland's first motorway service station was built at Harthill. Food distribution and the manufacture of plastics are local industries.
