A residential suburb of Cumbernauld in North Lanarkshire, Greenfaulds lies a mile (1.5 km) southwest of the town centre and was built as a combination of public and private housing, although much of the public housing has been sold under right-to-buy legislation. Shown as a scattered settlement on older Ordnance Survey maps, the area was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The streets have names associated with the author Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832), his works and heroes; namely Abbotsford, Ashiestiel, Athelstane, Fairford, Halidon, Ivanhoe, Lochinvar, Lammermoor, Locksley, Marmion, Melrose and Waverley. Greenfaulds benefits from a few shops and a community centre, while Greenfaulds Station, Cumbernauld Apostolic Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Woodlands Primary School and Glencryan Special School are all also located here, together with Cumbernauld's fire station and ambulance station. Greenfaulds High School opened in 1971.
