Great Bernera's claim to fame is that it was the scene of the first crofter's land revolt against the landowning authorities in 1874. The events of the 'Bernera Riot' and the subsequent trial and exhonoration of the accused paved the way for the land reform throughout the Highlands and Islands. A Cairn on the island marks the scene of the 'Riot' and is built from stones from every croft in the island. At Bostadh beach at the north end of the island are the remains of an iron-age village. A re-constructed iron-age house is sited next to it. The main industry on the island is shellfish processing and a Victorian Lobster pond is worth visiting. Other interesting sites are the Norse mill at Loch Risay and Dun Bharabhat broch. The island used to be home to 730 people at the start of the twentieth century. - Anonymous
