11 August 2013:
The 'Ellen' of The Lady of the Lake was the inspiration for a very famous song indeed. Franz Schubert's "Ellens Dritter Gesang", D839, universally known as his "Ave Maria" was a setting of words by Scott from the closing pages of Canto III of The Lady of the Lake, in a translation into German by Adam Storck. Schubert actually set 7 of the 13 songs in the poem, in the hope that Scott's name might help his name become better known outside Austria.
