12 July 2002:
I am happy to report that since the photo of Melville Castle appeared on your site, I took a short trip there on my last visit home. I was so sad to see the Castle in such disrepair, and thought I would take a last look before the walls began to crumble from neglect. I was so pleased I did! The hotel has been bought over and is being transformed into a luxury hotel. The manager very kindly showed me around. Although it was not nearly ready for the public, it was obviously being renovated with no thought of expense. I admit I had misgivings with some of the projects, such as an ornate marble fireplace in the upstairs dining room, which didn't seem in keeping with the period of the building. I should have thought an robust oak firplace would have been more at home! However, at least it is being looked after and shall hopefully continue to be one of the treasures of Edinburh and Dalkeith.
