History
Due to drunkenness associated with the naval base, the government took over all of the public houses in the area in 1916-18 under the State Management Scheme, closing many and serving reduced-strength beer under strict conditions at the others. This proved a lucrative enterprise for the Treasury!
Industry
The Invergordon Distillery was said to be the largest grain distillery in Europe by the beginning of the 21st century, with a capacity up to 35 million litres of alcohol annually.
